The character is not applicable if the metanotum and the propodeum are separated. The transverse line of the metanotum/propodeum complex delimits an anterior narrow area. The line is continuous with the ventral margin of the anterolateral metanotal area, hence could be consider as the mark of the site of the \"fusion\" of the metanotum and the propodeum. In one Dendrocerus species group the line extending medially, and fusing with the antecostal line at the median point, whereas in other Megaspilidae the line either absent (Dendrocerus propodealis) or fusing with the antecostal line sublaterally. The character is not applicable in Ceraphronidae, where the transverse line is absent. In some cases there is a very narrow area extending along the anterior margin of the metathorax propodeal complex, but it might be the dorsal inflection of the complex and hence the line separating this area is perhaps not equivalent with the transverse line in Megaspilidae. In some taxa, however the anterior mesodiscrimenal pit is absent, and the medially curving posterior margin of the epicnemium is convex posteriorly. Most of the species belonging to these group has reduced discrimenal lamella not extending anteriorly to the posterior margin of the epicnemium. \nWhat is the facial process? -- Carolyn 5/20/15?\n
\n
\nThe facial apodeme is an apodeme that is located in the middle of the upper face and does or does not correspond to any external marks. In most Conostigmus species the apodeme is marked by a deep pit, in numerous Dendrocerus by a small spine and in Conostigmus clavatus by a vertical median keel that arises ventrally of the pit. The facial apodeme is a dark spot in glycerin stored specimens (black or dark brown specimens need to be bleached for making the pit visible). The function of the facial apodeme is unknown, it seems to be connected to the pharynx by muscle looking structures (see: IM1741, Csp. 7) and might serve as the site of origin of one of the pharyngeal muscles. The facial apodeme is present in all Ceraphronoidea, in Megischus and in Evaniidae, where it does not correspond to any external structure.

Median conjunctiva of abdominal tergum 9 is present in Xyelidae, Megalyroidea, Evaniidae and Trigonaloidea and in some Ceraphronoidea. In those ceraphronoid taxa, where the conjunctiva is absent, the abdominal tergum 9 is constricted medially (anterior and posterior margins are concve). The level of constriction is continuous character (no discrete stages can be defined) but seems to be consistent on species level and hence might be useful for species identification.
\r\nThe ninth abdominal tergum is an area that corresponds to the 9th tergosternal muscles. The sclerite that accomodates the cercus is the ninth dorsal sclerite of the abdomen in Gasteruptiidae and in Megischus. This sclerite pair migth be considered as the remnant of the tenth abdominal tergum. The cercus is located in other outgroups always on a the ninth or more anterior dorsal sclerite, that is connected to the previous sclerite via muscles and conjunctiva. The eight dorsal sclerite of the metasoma in Pristaulacus is subdivided, whereas the 9th dorsal sclerite is continuous medially (in Aulacus both sclerites are continuous medially). Schulmeister (2003) concluded that the subdivided sclerite is the ninth abdominal tergum, and the continuous apical one with the cerci is equivalent with the tenth abdominal tergum (character 351 state 2 has been scored for Pristaulaulacus). Although the anterior terga of Aulacidae are fused separations between latergoterga and the presence of independent sterna make it possible to count and number tergites. In basal Hymenoptera (represented here by Xyela) the metasoma consists of 9 terga out of which the last, tenth abdominal tergum, bears the cerci. In Apocrita (represented here by other outgroup taxa and Ceraphronoidea) outgroup taxa the metasoma consisst of 8 terga and the ninth abdominal tergum bears the cerci. It was hypothesized in former studies (e.g. Snodgrass 1941), that the 10th abdominal tergum has been fused with the 9th tergum in Apocrita, since the cerci bearing tergum is highly reduced in basal Hymenoptera but well developed in most Apocrita. In Pristaulacus the apical, cerci bearing sclerite is well developed. In Aulacus, the other Aulacidae genus, the apical, cerci bearing sclerite is well developed, and very similar to that in Pristaulacus (pers. obs.) and the preceeding sclerite is not subdivided. Based on these argument we consider that in Pristaulacus the tenth abdominal tergum (similarly to other Apocrita) is absent (either is fused with the abdominal tergum 9 or reduced) and the 8th tergum is subdivided medially by extensive membrane.

The preoccipital lunula is absent from Conostigmus missihazeni. This character is not apllicable if the head is prognathous i.e. the ocelli are ventral to the occipital carina in lateral view (e.g. Conostigmus babaiax, C. pseudobabaiax, C. johncantolinai and C. longulus).

The speculum is the area of the mesopleuron that corresponds to the site of origin of the anterior mesopleuro-mesofurcal muscle. The speculum is well defined externally in Megaspilidae by distinct longitudinal anatomical structures whereas not visible in Ceraphronidae. Since the definition does not contains information about the external distinctness of the speculum, the character is still applicable in Ceraphronidae, where the speculum is defined only by the site of origin of the anterior mesopleuro-mesofurcal muscle.

The submedian conjunctiva on distoventral margin of gonostyle-volsella complex separates a median area from the ventral part of the gonostyle-volsella complex that serves as the site of origin of the median gonostyle/volsella complex-volsella muscle. This median area might be homologous with the parossiculus based on the site of origin of the median gonostyle/volsella complex-volsella muscles and the notch might mark the \u201Csite of fusion\u201D of the parossiculus with the gonostipes. In Pseudofoenus a second, proximoventral notch also delimits the median area from the proximal region of the gonostyle-volsella complex (Fig. 62).

\n

In Ceraphronidae the parossiculus is fused with the gonostipes ventrally and along the entire ventromedian margin of the gonostipes. In Aphanogmus species with dorsally \u201Ccurved\u201D parossiculus, the parossiculus is fused only proximally laterally. (like Asp. 2).

The distodorsal gonostipo-penisvalval muscle inserts on the apex of the apodeme. Since site of origin of the penisvalvo-gonossiculal muscle extends dorsally along the apodeme, the presence of the apodeme might be correlated to the moving mechanism of the gonossiculus.

This character is not applicable if both carinae are absent. The preoccipital carina limits anteriorly the preoccipital lunula, whereas the occipital carina is extending around the occipital foramen posteriorly of the preoccipital lunula. Both carinae might be extended ventrally along the gena reaching the oral foramen. In some Ceraphronidae and in Lagynodinae the occipital carina is short, not extending ventrally to the oral foramen and the preoccipital carina is absent (state0). In some Ceraphronidae, the occipital carina is short, interrupted laterally of the occipital foramen, whereas the preoccipital carina extends ventrally to the oral foramen (state1). In other Ceraphronidae the preoccipital carina is absent from the vertex, but a carina, that is continuous with the anterior margin of the preoccipital lunula extends ventrally to the oral foramen (state2). In some Megaspilinae the occipital carina extends ventrally to the oral foramen with the preoccipital carina present on the vertex, but not extending ventrally along the gena (state3). In state 3 the preoccipital carina is usually reduced and present only medially on the vertex or in Dendrocerus species with branched antennae (always?) the carina fused with the postorbital ocular carina. In most Megaspilidae the preoccipital carina is absent and the occipital carina extends ventrally to the oral foramen (state 4). In the latter case the preoccipital lunula is usually absent.
